Haryana Launches Heat-Resistant Crop Insurance Scheme

Recognizing the growing risks of climate change, Haryana has launched a special insurance scheme for heat-resistant crops like pearl millet and guar. The program covers temperature-induced crop failure and provides timely compensation. Developed with ICICI Lombard and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, it uses real-time temperature data to determine payouts. In pilot villages in Hisar and Sirsa, over 8,000 farmers have enrolled. This is the first time crop insurance has been linked directly with weather tolerance instead of only yield. The state hopes this will encourage cultivation of resilient crops and reduce dependence on traditional water-intensive farming.
