Maharashtra Deploys AI Surveillance to Prevent Deforestation

Maharashtra’s Forest Department has launched an AI-based surveillance program to combat illegal logging in sensitive forest zones like Melghat and Tadoba. Satellite images and drone footage are processed through AI models that identify sudden tree loss, unauthorized clearings, or unusual human activity. Forest rangers receive real-time alerts and can verify GPS coordinates to act swiftly. Since deployment, over 20 illegal activities have been intercepted. This technology has reduced human workload and improved response time. Officials say it enhances conservation efforts and acts as a deterrent against forest crimes, with plans to implement the system across all state reserves.
