In a move to improve urban order and livelihood security, the Chennai Municipal Corporation has rolled out 50 smart street vending zones equipped with digital billing kiosks, solar lighting, drinking water stations, and sanitation units. Each zone houses 20–30 registered vendors, all of whom have undergone basic digital literacy training and received identity-enabled smart cards. These vending zones are geotagged and monitored via CCTV, offering safety and hygiene assurance to both vendors and customers. Cashless transactions have increased by 60% since the launch, and vendors have reported up to a 30% increase in earnings. Local NGOs have been roped in to train vendors on waste segregation and customer service. The zones are designed to reduce traffic congestion and pedestrian obstruction while uplifting informal traders through structure and dignity. Plans are underway to introduce similar zones in Coimbatore and Madurai.
