Delhi Begins Pilot of Water ATM Machines in Urban Slums

In an attempt to provide clean and affordable drinking water to underprivileged communities, Delhi Jal Board has launched water ATM kiosks in urban slums. These machines allow residents to collect up to 20 liters of RO-filtered water per day at ₹1 per liter using prepaid smart cards. The pilot covers 25 slums in West Delhi and uses solar-powered filtration systems. Locals appreciate the convenience and quality, reporting fewer waterborne illnesses. Each ATM is maintained by a local women’s self-help group, offering employment and ensuring upkeep. If successful, 200 more machines are expected to be installed across the city in the next two years.
